GET IT NOWI’ll take any excuse to make sweet potatoes, but these air fryer sweet potato fries? They disappear faster than I can cook them! They’re ultra crispy, the perfect balance of savory and sweet, with just the right amount of seasoning that pairs with anything. It’s no wonder my kids (um, and I) sneak them straight from the basket. Make them with me and you’ll be doing the same thing!
Why You Need My Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries Recipe

- Crispy outside, fluffy inside – The air fryer works magic for this, but I have so many tips for you to nail that perfect texture. These air fried sweet potato fries beat a restaurant any day.
- Simple ingredients – Just sweet potatoes, olive oil, and a few seasonings you probably already have. No starches or mystery oils needed, and so much better for you than deep frying!
- Quicker than the oven – If you soak your fries the night before, cooking sweet potato fries in the air fryer only takes about 12 minutes per batch—way faster than roasting sweet potatoes! I finish them all together at the end for extra crispness.

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for my air fryer sweet potato fries, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
- Sweet Potatoes – Use orange sweet potatoes like I did, or change it up with white ones or even yams. If you want to use white potatoes instead, I have a separate recipe for air fryer fries here.
- Olive Oil – Gets the fries crispy, helps the seasoning stick, and locks in moisture — but you need less oil than with other methods. Avocado oil works just as well!
- Seasonings – I kept it simple with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper, but you can season these however you like! Check out more seasoning ideas below. 👇

How To Cut The Fries
I leave the skin on for texture and nutrients, but you can peel them before slicing if you want.
To cut the sweet potatoes into fries, slice them lengthwise first, then stack the slices and cut into strips. If your sweet potatoes are large, I recommend then stacking the strips and cutting crosswise to make them shorter. 3-4 inches long is a good size.
The ideal thickness for this recipe is 3/8 inch — thicker than 1/4 inch but thinner than 1/2 inch. This gives you the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft inside. If you want larger wedges, use my other air fryer sweet potato recipe.

How To Make Sweet Potato Fries In The Air Fryer
I have step-by-step photos here to help you visualize the recipe. For full instructions with amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card.
- Soak the fries. Submerge them in cold water for at least 20 minutes (or overnight), then drain and pat dry.
- Toss with seasonings. In a very large mixing bowl, toss the fries with olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

- Spread them out. Arrange the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them.
- Air fry until crispy. Cook the air fryer sweet potato fries in batches, shaking the basket halfway through, until tender and golden brown. Repeat until all the fries are done—it usually takes me 3-4 batches for 2 pounds.

- The final crisp. Once all the batches are done, toss the sweet potato fries in the air fryer again, all together this time, for a couple minutes to heat up and get extra crispy. Sprinkle with more salt if needed and enjoy!

My Recipe Tips
- Soaking the sweet potatoes is key to make the fries extra crispy, so I highly recommend this step. You can soak for up to 24 hours in the fridge.
- Grab the largest mixing bowl you’ve got. You’ll need a very large bowl to fit 2 pounds of sweet potato fries! I use and love this one that has a non-slip bottom.
- Tongs are the easiest way to mix in the seasonings. If you don’t have any, two spoons would also work to toss together.
- Want extra crispness? Add 2 teaspoons of baking powder with the other seasonings. It absorbs moisture as they cook, leaving your air fried sweet potato fries extra crispy!
- Don’t crowd the air fryer. It’s okay if some of the fries are touching, but you don’t want them overlapping or super packed.
- Don’t forget to shake the basket halfway through for even browning. I find that just once is enough. My air fryer beeps as a reminder to “flip the food”, and that’s the perfect time to shake the basket. If yours doesn’t have this feature, just set a timer.
- When you shake the basket, ensure that the fries land in a single layer again. You can move them into place with tongs if needed.
Seasoning Variations
I love a basic seasoning, but try these additions if you want something extra:
- Dried Herbs – A teaspoon each of dried rosemary and thyme pairs well here.
- Warm Spices – Cinnamon or cumin pairs well with sweet potatoes.
- Heat – For a kick, add a teaspoon of chili powder or 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
- Seasoning Blends – Italian seasoning or Cajun seasoning is awesome on air fryer sweet potato fries! Keep in mind that my Cajun seasoning already includes salt, so don’t add extra if you use it.
- Maple Syrup – Drizzle with 1-2 tablespoons for some caramelization. This works with my sugar-free maple syrup, too.

Serving Ideas
Air fryer sweet potato fries pair well with so many proteins! Here are my go-to options:
- Beef – My classic beef burgers are always juicy and a perfect match for these fries, but I also love mixing it up with a turkey burger or salmon burger for something different! If you’re craving a steak, my skirt steak recipe is super easy and the juiciest steak I’ve ever had.
- Chicken – I like to bake chicken breasts or chicken legs in the oven while I have the sweet potato fries in the air fryer. If you prefer to air fry your entire meal for less cleanup, make the fries first. Then you can air fry chicken tenders quickly, and then toss the fries back in the basket for 1-2 minutes to crisp up before serving.
- Pork – Sizzle a tender pork steak or whip up my juicy air fryer pork chops for an easy meal.
- Sauce – My family loves dunking these in ranch dressing or honey mustard, but you can use your favorite dipping sauce. Try my sugar-free ketchup (pictured above), tahini sauce, or aioli.

-
Using a chef’s knife, slice the sweet potatoes into fries, about 3/8 inch thick. (I left the skin on, but you can peel them if you like.)
-
Place the fries in a large bowl and submerge in cold water. Soak for at least 20 minutes, or overnight. Drain and pat dry.
-
Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees F (193 degrees C).
-
In an extra large bowl, toss the fries with olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
-
Arrange the sweet potato fries in the air fryer basket in a single layer, with spaces between them. (You will need to cook in batches.)
-
Air fry sweet potato fries for 10-14 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. (12 minutes is usually the perfect amount of time for my air fryer.)
-
Repeat steps 5-6 with more batches. (It usually takes me 3-4 batches for 2 pounds of sweet potatoes.)
-
Once all your batches are done, toss them all back into the air fryer (all together this time) and air fry for 1-2 minutes, until hot and crispy again.
-
Sprinkle with extra salt to your taste if needed.

Maya’s Recipe Notes
Serving size: 1 cup, or 1/6 of entire recipe (~20 3-4 inch fries)
- Tips: Check out my recipe tips above to help you get the best texture with a fluffy inside and extra crispy outside, ensure even cooking, and just overall make the recipe easier.
- Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Meal prep: Cut the fries ahead and soak them in water for extra crispiness later! Store in the fridge, covered in water, for up to 24 hours.
- Reheat: Air fry at 320 degrees F to crisp them up again. I find that higher temps get them too dark the second time around.
- Freeze: Freeze in a single layer, then transfer to a zip lock bag and keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
