With a luscious creamy topping that’s gets an upgrade from optional smoked paprika and fresh chives, these easy deviled eggs are ready to start the party.
And you know what? They’re not just the best appetizer — they’re my favorite go-to for celebrating any gathering. Plus, with my hard-boiled eggs guide, the eggs are super easy to peel.
Why This Is My Best Deviled Eggs Recipe

- Classic flavor – This has all the classic taste you know and love from deviled eggs: rich and savory, with hints of Dijon mustard and a tang of vinegar.
- Silky-smooth filling – Nobody wants clumpy eggs! With my egg cooking method, the inside gets super smooth.
- Easy to make – You probably already all the ingredients on hand (just 5 of them, plus salt and optional toppings), so you’ll always be ready to whip up a winning appetizer. And this easy deviled eggs recipe is done in 20 minutes!
- Super versatile – These are naturally gluten-free and fit a variety of lifestyles. And they just taste plain good. They are always a favorite at parties, holidays, and potlucks! But also make a complete protein packed lunch alongside a ham salad sandwich.

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the ingredients for the best deviled egg recipe, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
- Eggs – Using room temperature eggs can make them easier to peel after boiling.
- Mayonnaise – I use homemade mayo when I get the chance because it just tastes better (and takes only a few minutes to make!), but it’s totally fine to use store-bought and I’ve done this before as well. You can also use Greek yogurt as an alternative, but the flavor will be different.
- Dijon Mustard – Adds a zingy kick and classic flavor. Swap with regular mustard for a simpler taste or try a hint of horseradish for a bold twist.
- Apple Cider Vinegar – This is my secret ingredient that adds tang and breaks down the yolks for extra creaminess. Swap with white wine vinegar, dill pickle juice, or lemon juice if you don’t have any.
- Seasonings – I season the yolk mixture with garlic powder and sea salt, but you could play around with other favorites, like onion powder or paprika. For a spicy kick, add a touch of cayenne pepper, or simply black pepper.
- Optional Toppings – For a beautiful display, sprinkle this deviled egg recipe with smoked paprika and fresh chives. I almost always add these to mine.

How To Make Deviled Eggs
I have step-by-step photos here to help you visualize the recipe. For full instructions with amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card.
- Cook the eggs. Use my easy peel boiled eggs method to boil the eggs. (You can also use any other method, such as air fryer boiled eggs.) Place in ice water to cool, then peel.

- Mash the yolks. Slice the eggs in half the long way with a paring knife. Remove the yolks and place them into a large bowl. Mash with a fork.
- Add the remaining ingredients. Add the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and sea salt to the egg yolks. Mix well.

- Assemble. Pipe the egg yolk mixture back into the egg white halves with a piping bag, or just use a spoon if you don’t have one. Sprinkle this classic deviled egg recipe with smoked paprika and fresh chives.

How Long To Boil Eggs For Deviled Eggs?
The eggs should be hard boiled, but not overdone. Using the method where you boil them the entire time (rather than removing from heat to finish), cook the eggs for 7-10 minutes to get the right consistency.
Recipe Variations
The recipe card below is the basic version, but there are many ways to make deviled egg recipes by using this one as a starting point. Here are some of the variations I’ve tried over the years:
- Bacon – Elevate your deviled eggs by adding crispy bacon on top. For a step-by-step guide, check out my deviled eggs with bacon recipe.
- Avocado – Use mashed ripe avocado instead of mayonnaise.
- Spicy – Kick up the heat by adding 1-2 minced jalapenos or your favorite spicy seasonings into the yolk mixture. Adjust the amounts according to your preferred spice level.
- Southern – For a Southern twist, add around 1-2 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish to the yolk mixture.
- Shrimp – Top with small cooked shrimp. (You can poach them, but I prefer to saute shrimp instead.) Place one on each filled egg half at the end.
- Halloween – Make these with fun colors and a seasonal garnish with my Halloween deviled eggs recipe.
- Easter – Get creative for Easter by turning these into little chicks! Just top with olives and carrots for the eyes and beaks.
Storage Instructions
Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Perfect for making ahead!
I don’t recommend freezing them. It will ruin the texture of the egg whites.

0The apple cider vinegar really adds a nice tang to the filling. The yolks turned out perfectly smooth. No clumps in sight! added a dash of horseradish to the filling for some extra kick, and it was delicious.

0I have never made deviled eggs since my mom always made them for the holidays, so this recipe was my first try at them. I had a hard time peeling the eggs, but once done with that step, everything came out perfect. Love the taste.
